Hugh Calvin Dunn

Hugh Calvin Dunn “Coach”, 98, passed away on December 14, 2020 at the Macon Health Care Center in Macon, MO.

Coach was born March 15, 1922 in Harrisonville, MO, the son of William and Mary (Campbell) Dunn. He was united in marriage to Margaret “Peg” Louise Rose on June 11, 1949 in Wilmette, IL. She preceded him in death on June 26, 2013.

Coach served in the United States Army from 1942-1945. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart medals. Coach was a member of the United Methodist Church, Lion’s Club, Macon Booster Club, and Macon Country Club. He taught and coached at Macon R-1 High School for over 40 years. He enjoyed working, mowing, going to football, basketball, softball, and baseball games, going to track meets, camping and traveling. Coach especially loved following his kids’ athletic careers, and playing with his grandkids.

Coach is survived by his five children, Buck Dunn and his wife Patty of Macon, Buddy Dunn and his wife Elaine of Independence, MO, Nancy Downing and her husband Mike of Fair Grove, MO, Laurie Cook and her husband Eric of Aurora, CO, and Todd Dunn and his wife Tammy of Lawson, MO; eleven grandchildren, Leslie Muncy and her husband Nic, Heather Brown, Ben Dunn, Nick Dunn, Chris Dunn, Josh Downing and his wife Oakley, Bryce Downing, Ross Cook and his wife Jessica, Mallory Cook, Tyler Dunn, Carissa Dunn; eight great-grandchildren, Madison and Jace Muncy, Amiya, Marleigh, and Ryder Brown, Abel Downing, Salem and Payton LaRue; and one sister, Irma Frances Robertson of Silver Spring, MD.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Peg; and siblings, Harvey Lee Dunn, William Dunn, Mary Jean Dove, and Rose Marie Glanze.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 20, 2020, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Hugh Dunn Field at Macon High School. A private family funeral service will be 10:00 am, Monday, December 21, 2020, at the Hutton and McElwain Funeral Home with Bro. Jim Bolin officiating. Burial will be in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, MO. The family suggests memorials to the United Methodist Church of Macon or the Macon R-1 Athletic Department.
