Jefferson City Relief

by Tiann Bilinski

Having heard of the devastation in a community so close to home, it is natural that we would want to reach out and help as we can.

The Red Cross has now authorized for organized groups to come into the city to help with clean up. However, the United Way has stated: "Do not self deploy to the scene of the disaster. The arrival of unexpected volunteers will interfere with the initial response and assessment efforts. You could unsuspectingly place yourself or others at greater risk."

So what do we do to help?

One of the best avenues set up for response in such a case as this, is to visit https://www.justserve.org/ or download the Android or Apple JustServe app. "JustServe" was set up not just for this purpose, but is definitely helpful in a situation such as this. It has proven to be an effective tool to get information to the public for what is needed and for civic leaders to organize efforts of those who come willing to help.

A search for opportunities in the zip code area of 65109 will direct seekers to organized efforts they can join. Some will require you to sign up, but others will simply give time and location information for the service opportunity. Be sure to check often as new opportunities will surely be added as efforts continue in the clean up of this tragedy.

And for all you do... many thanks are given.

Update:

This was sent out this morning to registered volunteers via email:

United Way of Central Missouri has received approval to mobilize volunteers beginning at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, May 25.

We are grateful to the utility companies, first responder personnel, law enforcement officials and all others involved in the immediate response and their work to make all disaster areas safe so volunteers can begin assisting in the recovery efforts.

All volunteers interested in helping with this effort should report to the Volunteer Reception Center in the Sears wing of the Capital Mall in Jefferson City located at 3600 Country Club Drive, beginning at 10 a.m. and throughout the day until 5 p.m.

Upon arrival, volunteers should check-in at registration to receive their work assignments. Individuals interested in volunteering that have not yet registered are welcome to come to the Volunteer Reception Center and will be guided through the registration process prior to being assigned their volunteer work. Volunteer Reception Center hours for the coming weeks are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All volunteers should bring:

Valid ID

Work gloves

Long pants

Closed-toed shoes (preferably work boots)

Water

Lunch

Volunteers cleaning up debris must be 18 years of age or older. There will be other tornado recovery related service activities posted as they become available.

There may be limited parking and congested roads in downtown Jefferson City, so please consider carpooling if serving with others.

You may reach the Volunteer Reception Center at 573-462-9904, or visit United Way of Central Missouri's website for updates.

Thank you for your help to rebuild our beautiful community!
